Of Dreams and Nightmares

The leader of Zadia had been halfway through a patrol of his territory with the young fox, Saxa. Willow was still too young to help out too much even though he tried to allow her to feel useful by getting her to do things that would seem super important but really keep her out of harms way. With Willow being so young, she needed lots of rest and time to grow which Vorek allowed her as much time as she needed. This was one of those moments. And then he heard the young fawn bleat out in absolute panic. Without wasting time, he turned to Saxa and ordered, ”Run as fast as you can to Avalan. Do not stop, tell Lady Bernadette that we need her help. Now! Run, Saxa, run!” Vorek started running towards Willow’s screams as fast as he could. Dread entering his heart.

It did not take the massive bear long to get closer and when he did, he saw the white fur of Willow running as well as the white fur and red eyes of Satan, trying to slink his way closer to her. While Vorek normally would have tried to talk things out, he knew exactly what Satan was trying to do because he had tried to do it before Willow made her choice to come with Vorek. He stopped long enough to stand on his hind legs and roared his absolute fury! ”You dare enter my territory to steal my youth! You will now suffer my wrath, lion!”

Vorek dropped down to all fours, hackles raising, getting into his fight stance with legs wide apart and lowering his hind legs slightly. He pinned his ears against his skull, narrowed his eyes, lifted his lip in a snarl and opened his jaw to prepare for the fight. With a final lowering of his head, the massive polar bear charged towards the white lion and did his best to land a heavy blow on the lion’s body with a massive punch with his right front paw.

Vorek felt Satan’s claws leave his neck just as swiftly as they had come. Within less than a second, the lion had used that same leg to block his massive blow. Instead of hopefully bruising Satan’s ribs, Vorek felt his heavy paw and claws connect with Satan’s leg. He felt the large cat’s elbow shift unnaturally but did not hear any bone’s breaking. While he strongly disliked Satan, Vorek would not wish for any animal, even a rival – even someone wishing harm on those he loved, to suffer from such a serious injury. A broken leg often meant a slow death. Satan had also moved quick enough so that Vorek’s jaws did not touch the fur of his mane. Instead, Vorek felt his teeth sink deep into the flesh of his shoulder; he immediately got the taste of blood in his mouth as they sank even deeper into the muscle. The bite was full force as well because he had thought he was going to have to bite through mane as well as flesh. He felt the flesh rip and move beneath his teeth as Satan tried to get out of his grip.



Both bear and lion had their teeth locked in each other’s shoulders now. Vorek’s ears were still pinned back, his lip was raised and was against Satan’s skin on his shoulder (yummy…not really). His hackles were still raised and his legs were set wide apart with Vorek’s hind legs lowered a bit in order to help him keep his balance. The polar bear kept his eyes narrowed in order to protect them and to keep the lion’s bushy mane from poking his eyes because he guessed that if any of that long hair got into them, then his eyes would probably water. His jaw was not able to be opened because his teeth were currently dug into Satan’s shoulder flesh and his head and neck were also stretched out to enable him to keep his teeth into the flesh. Vorek was not willing to let go until his enemy surrendered but Satan had other plans.



As soon as Satan released his shoulder, the bite marks dripping blood freely now, Vorek knew that the lion was going to try to make a swift move to attack again. Within milliseconds, Vorek lowered his head, Satan’s shoulder still in his jaws, and used his powerful hind legs and body to do what all bears did naturally… Vorek stood on his hind legs and swung his torso and head up at the same time. At the same time, Satan had also pushed with his legs to try to reach Vorek’s face, which had been higher than Satan’s jaws. Together, the momentum to both creatures trying to reach higher caused Satan’s teeth to completely miss their aim and instead skim across one of Vorek’s front paws as the bear thrust with his hind legs and all of his bodily muscles in his core to carry the lion’s weight for a split second before attempting to throw the lion onto the ground. If this was successful, Satan might actually end up dazed or stunned.



Vorek dropped to all fours again, immediately bending his hind legs for balance, getting back into fighting stance with his legs wide apart; ears pinned back, lip raised, hackles raised, his head lowered, jaws opened, and his eyes narrowed. He had hoped that on his descent down, that his body would have come crashing down on top of Satan’s heavily, but he knew that the lion was much faster than him and the likelihood of that happening was slim; so Vorek had just immediately went back into a defensive position. ”Enough, Satan. Go home, no more blood needs to be shed here.”
